Better Blogs May 2014

It’s time for another episode of Better Blogs in which I pass along the best information, inspiration and innovation I found on the web in the last month. There was a bountiful harvest of blogging goodness this May so for the first time I’m placing them in broad categories. Enjoy!

Gadgets & Gear

DC Rainmaker tests a prototype of the IOLITE GPS-enabled swim goggles. Unfortunately the device’s Kickstarter funding campaign was unsuccessful so it may not come to market. Still I know people were interested in this device.

At FreeTriSpeed, Jim Gourley, author of Faster: Demystifying the Science of Triathlon Speed, gives bike weight a thrashing worthy of MythBusters.

Bike Weight & the Myth of Fast Bikes

I found out about the Skulltec Advanced Gel Cap at the Steve in a Speedo?! Gross! blog. Check out Steve’s blog especially funny Fridays. For a while now I’ve been reading that bike helmets don’t give us as much protection as previously believed. Don’t get me wrong I’ll take whatever level of protection they provide. It’s a rough and tumble world out there even on rural roads. Still I’ve been wondering if there was a way to make helmets safer and was excited to see a product designed to increase the level of protection they provide. Please note the company’s disclaimer regarding injury at the bottom of their homepage.

Finally if you haven’t tuned in to the Triathlon Training Podcast, you’ve been missing one of the best triathlon podcasts available today. Great information from Coach Eric Schwartz, a retired pro duathlete with four Ironmans on his race resume. Solid information, great guests and on some podcasts Eric takes questions directly from new triathletes.
